Here we came with dancing feet and groovy hearts to the lively and songtastical – Seussical The Musical at their opening show on 6 Nov at the charming theatre by the bay, Esplanade. As the title blatantly implies – families can expect characters and incidents coming together from many of the books by Dr Seuss to educate the importance of friendships and self believing.
Upon entering the theatre, our eyes were drawn to the flawless set design that was marvelously brought to life with the whimsical shapes and designs of Seuss’ world. The set acted as a jungle gym enhancing the performance of all casts that graced the stage.
Bringing the audience a zany narrative interpretation of Dr Seuss books most prominently Horton Hears a Who, Horton hatches the egg and Miss Gertrude McFuzz. It was a 75 mins of bombastic song and dance sequences filling the audience below with infectious energy. Our toes can’t resist from tapping to the captivating lyrical music which involves all the colorful performers including kangaroos, jungle characters, bird girls and not missing out The wacky Whos frolicking around the stage.
Though out the show we find the mishmash story line a tad tricky to follow especially with the UK casts’ British accent. Young children were however seen eagerly jumping and signing along to each of the performances. If you are anticipating for heartwarming ending – well they nailed it and of course with a spark of an unexpected love story between Horton the Elephant and his loyal Gertrude McFuzz and some comical acts by the Cat in the Hat himself acting as a white coat Doctor, Judge, Auction master and Circus ring master! (We aren’t telling you more, you should be down catching it with your little bona-fide Seuss fans!)
Above all, there was no pause in between the moments of this impressive production as the casts weaved in and out of each scenes seamlessly. The musical easily puts grin in our faces and a warming touch in our hearts with its uplifting and hilarious stories. Bringing home for the young audience some inspirational tag lines and here’s our favourite – A person’s a person no matter how small.
So only got 1 day left to go, you won’t want to miss this!

But Horton faces a double challenge, he’s been left alone to guard an abandoned egg, abandoned by none other than Mayzie La Bird. Caught between a dust speck and his incubating egg, Horton is truly alone in the universe, but while he faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and ends up on trial, little does he know the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.
