This is the first time we stepped foot into the art-inspired SOTA Drama Theatre (located right beside The Cathay at Zubir Said Dr) as we contained our eager hearts to be satisfied by the same witty set of professional actors whom brought us ( one of our top favorite ) Jewels in the tale – a show that made us fall in love with I theatre productions! Their local style of the comical performance hit the right notes and never fail to roll us off the seats in every scene!
I Theatre had the stage done up beautifully with a blend of warm lighting and the use of simple props which vividly painted a story of its own before the show begin.
In the good hands of Brian Seward’s adaption from the original story, the scene was set in a lovely country cottage and a pot-full of garden vegetations transported the audience into the Diggory’s hometown. The simple country folks merely desire to win a prize to grow the enormous turnip, to become the rich and famous in town. So what do they have to do when Little Eek the mouse who’s dream is to be noticed ate the turnip seeds?
Much credits were given to the actors featuring Mr Diggory (Ebi Shankara), Mrs Diggory (Alecia Kim Chua), their house cat (Ghazali Musakir), the little mouse (Elizabeth Loh) and not forgetting the one who started this story of The enormous Turnip – the magician (Windson Liong) who was a surprise delight to the whole play! He had the role of providing the honest Mr. Diggory those magic turnip seeds as well as a few magic spells leaking moments that made the flowers grow faster and gates opening on its own! Look out for these little tricks that will amazed your little ones or even you!
Throughout the show, we loved the many occasions of audience interaction with kids yelling to inform the actors on the happenings behind their blind spot – for example while the little mouse, Erk was guarding the 3 turnip buds for Mr. Diggory, there came a hungry caterpillar which devoured 2 of the buds! Another when Little Erk was told not to eat the turnip seeds and unable to resist the temptation of the tasty seeds (and the kids calling NOOOOOOOO), he still ate it!
Family values were also installed into the play with teachings of thinking for others, team work, integrity and as well as some good old gardening tips! When the Diggorys were trying to pull the enormous turnip out of the ground, team work was wisely-used with the help of the house cat, the willing helper little mouse, Erk and some volunteering kids from the audience to heave out the Enormous turnip! So the kids get to back home a valuable lesson on team work and also to not underestimate any volunteering heart no matter how insignificant you are or how small you may be!
This maybe our 3rd time attending I theatre’s performance but we always love how the kids gets to meet the casts right after the show, it’s the way of I theatre’s “we hope you enjoyed the show“, and indeed we did very much! With an improved and reinvented version of their sold-out production from 2013, the captivating The Enormous Turnip runs till 6 December 2015! So if you still have not got your tickets, hurry grab them to avoid any disappointment!
Do Note – strictly no photography and video during the play!
Enjoy,
