It’s the start of a fresh new year in 2016, and our experience down at Village Hotel Katong is still lingering at the back of our mind as we reminisced the superb comfy beds, spotless bath area and the perfect sized pool which served as a simple yet refreshing staycation.
If you are still searching for an undemanding family travel need in Singapore, look towards this refurbished hotel down at Katong for a culture-rich experience (we mean lots of eateries in the neighbourhood and shopping to do!) that might have you too, dread the thought of going home.
Let’s check out what went on our family staycation.. we sure got lots to share!
Under the umbrella of the prominent Far East Hospitality hotels, Village Hotel Katong was refurbished from the former abiding Paramount Hotel Singapore transferred into the present Peranakan-inspired luxury hotel in the Joo Chiat and Katong district targeted for modern jet-setters and a culture-filled family’s weekend getaway.
Being an East Coast Hotel, it’s superb location is great for food hunting along the streets of Joo Chiat road, a 10-minute walk away to the trending Parklane Green at East Coast Park. Those looking to shop their staycation away you can arrive in a short 5 minutes walk to Parkway Parade Shopping Mall, I12 Katong Shopping Mall, Roxy Square and Tanjong Katong Shopping Centre. Depending what you looking for, there are definitely something suitable for all ages within the family.
This is where we spend our late evening splashing water and diving in for a swim, where the nearby surroundings are peaceful and the Sun usually are blocked by noon time! We had such a great time just effortlessly chilling the day away. The gradient pool starts from 1.2m to 1.8m so it’s good to know which side to get your little ones in before they plunge!
Families will be delighted to find out about the myriad of facilities to make the stay as pleasurable as possible with the well-stocked gymnasium, that inviting outdoor swimming pool both on the fourth level with complimentary kids float for use, and even bus shuttle services to various MRT stations and Big Splash at East Coast Park! If your family has good appetite don’t lock yourselves in the rooms (that’s tempting okay!), go trundle to the streets of Joo Chiat to taste those delectable Katong cuisines!
We arrived in the family room where new world meets old charms; grey motifs decorate the walls alongside the warm fuschia Peranakan colours that reminiscing the brilliant hue of the Nonya culture while modern facilities liked the standing rain shower, complimentary wired Internet and Wi-Fi access, and a 46-inch LED TVs with all the cable channels are right at your convenience.
Our room are wide-spread with ample space to put another baby cot and comes with a balcony which we enjoyed a quality time just snapping photos away of the gorgeous view from our high-level room (family rooms are at levels 9 to 12).
Located on the fourth floor and perched before the swimming pool, the Modernise Peranakan decorated Katong Kitchen served a range of choices from the local food of the Katong district. Featuring Nonya, Macanese, Asian, Local Chinese to Western fare, while being Halal-certified, muslim guests can now dine with ease. Alternatively, if you are an old school foodie, swing by Roxy square and try the kind of food that a true Katong people would wake up for, which we will show you more later on!
Lapis Lounge, named after a traditional Peranakan snack – Kuei Lapis, can be found on the second level, right beside the lobby serving light refreshments such as satay, truffle fries, and cakes from 12pm to 1030pm daily. You can hop by and unwind on their colorful couches anytime of the day, perfect for an afternoon tea we say!
[KATONG V]
Although Katong V is not a vast mall to roam around but we definitely see this as one of the family malls we loved visiting. Take a moment to swing by level 3 where there are plenty of kids activities waiting such as a cozy indoor kids playground Ho.2T PlayLand, enjoy a trial lesson at Kindermusik With Love Studios or pamper your babies at Baby SPA!
Not to forget the hip cafes within the mall, our two highly recommended spots are the newly opened Bread & Hearths and Group Therapy Cafe that offers all-day breakfast items, as well as pancakes, pies, stews, cakes and artisanal coffee!
[PARKWAY PARADE]
For some pho-bulous (we really mean it!) Vietnamese Pho, you won’t be disappointed to cross the bridge over to Parkway Parade to eat at SO PHO! Their modern setting with cushion pillow piling on their seats enables the whole family to be lavished with a menu full of delish authentic Vietnamese cuisine any more authentic you got to visit the country yourself! It’s honestly that good!
[ROXY SQUARE]
A true hidden gem within Roxy Square, many have seen having their tresses maintained at the various salon at level 1 of the mall, and even more have been patrolizing the food stalls in this food court right opposite the salons. Here are what we will always order when we are there – The Orginial Nonya Laska (50years), Western food at Strands & Grains, Peanut Porridge and Prawn Mee from Nancy’s Food to the Wanton Mee is all worth the morning early wake from your hotel rooms to grab a seats here.
