Fitness made fun for kids. Want to exhaust your junior out with the correct way by exercising and having real golden fun at the same time? Want to find the best sort of toddler’s class to enroll before they even enter nursery or preschool? If you are thinking (liked what any other zombified parents are thinking, hungrily deprived of rest due to entertaining those never-ending energy bunnies) of steaming off all the energy your little one boosts, let us introduce a recent trial session we had with the fun MY GYM @ Tampines, the HQ outlet with their new program – (!drum roll) Gymsters!
Children from the age of 19 months to 3 Years learns how to balance, tumble, hanging, and more agility skills in a structured way with songs, dance, sports, and games in this program! Which is Exactly what we experience last Monday, a knocked out kid after the trial lesson! (woohoo!)
Located at NTUC Building at Tampines Central, we had an easy time turning up at the right building as the Tampines MRT station is 5 mins walk away. It was wide-spaced, clean and brightly-lit, with multi-color ball pits, kids-friendly slides, hanging ropes from the ceiling and even a mini trampoline in the play area which looks very much liked a Children indoor playground. We could totally see the excitement from our toddler when he fixed his sight on the slides and ball pit! Before the class starts, we were kindly briefed by the teachers that no food and drinks are allowed though they do sell snacks and drinks at the counter can only be consumed outside the play area in case the little tummies rumble after lessons. And only 1 parent is allowed to attend the lesson with the child while the other waits outside the play area.
To ensure their high level of hygiene and cleanliness of the play area for all kids, our boy was asked to take his temperature as well as sterilized his hands before we entered. Compare to the other indoor playground, the young and high spirit teachers provided us with wet wipes instead of the hand sanitizer which we totally preferred this way because hand sanitizer always easily dry up their hands. We were indeed impressed by their thoughtfulness and how they could remember all the children’s name with ease.
EXPLORATION
Firstly, the teachers gave the children some time to do their exploration as the kids are sure to feel fresh and unfamiliar of the area before the class starts. Right away, all the children ran straight to the slides and ball pit – who won’t right. Then when the teachers wanted us to break the ice and “officially” start the lessons, we were all gathered by at least 3 teachers around to assist and guide us with games and songs to say hello to everyone.
CONSTANT CHANGING OF SET UPS AND GYM CONFIGURATION
An important point was mentioned by the teachers that there are no repeat programs, each week all Gym equipment and set up changed each week though the main structure remains the same. So there will always be a new experience for the children every single time they come for classes. Though this is our first lesson but by the thought of that, we could see why they have won themselves numerous times the US Parents’ Choice Awards with their steady emphasis on the innovation and motivation they placed in children.
With much encouragement from the teachers, the kids get to high-five, answer their own questions when the teachers asked what they liked to do, and the freedom to do whatever sport they like. We started off with the hanging bar, and it looks so fun and far-fetch initially, but it wasn’t so as two teachers patiently and carefully guided our boy to swing liked a monkey with the proper techniques. So here you could see his proud and delighted face which he gladly did it twice in a roll!
Next up, with safety ropes and equipment hanging from the ceiling, the teachers build a bridge suitable for children at their age to cross over and develop balancing skills. We can’t say that this looks difficult because our boy did it in one stealth and steady move, in a blink of an eye he crossed to the other side. The teachers held his hands and encouraged him along the way!
After this, the teachers let the kids explored the various type of gym equipment in their own preference, and guess where mine went? Bingo, apparently the slides here are laid with velcro mat so it’s safe for whatever age your child is. He also gave the trampoline a little hop, as well as the rocker and had a shot at the kids-sized basketball loop before we were all called back to the red circle mat for the second round of imagination games-play.
The teachers are always nearby to assist the kids.
Thru out the program, there were always either 1 or 2 teachers around to assist and encourage them, attention was given at prompt moments and our boy warmed up easily to the friendly teachers.
IMAGINATION TIME
With loud and clear instructions from the teachers, we gathered back to the red circle for parent and child bonding time with ball rowing, peek a boo song singing and with the use of a noodle-stick the kids get to imagine it as a walking stick, elephant nose, and a coloring crayon to develop cognitive skills in a child. Teachers were fun and vibrant in their actions, with good coordination within themselves, and all activities were well-planned, we could clearly see how every steps teaches something important and skillful to the children.
SWING TIME
Our favorite moment was definitely the swing time when the junior hopped on a ride on two different swings with a 3-point safety harness. On our first try, our son had a doubt on this activity as the swing was leveled higher than the usual ones we play, but just when he tried to struggle, there were bubbles appearing from behind him. Teachers were blowing bubbles! That made the children giggle and so excited!
GOODBYE MONKEY
Right before we said our goodbye, we had storytelling time! Compare to the other classes (music and playgroup) we attended, who would imagine a fitness class had so many programs within a class, they do make sure it was worth the time coming. The teachers gave one round of describing the story with puppets, then repeat the second time to prompt the kids to memorize and say it out loud with them again. Before we know it, it was time to say goodbye!
Overall, we indeed had great fun chasing after the kids around, wanting to try everything. As much as mine got exhausted out after this, we did too! We love how the place was well-kept even though it might be full of kids around, and definitely, we were impressed by the friendly vibe from all the teachers. This would surely be a class I loved my boy to be back each week to work on not just physical coordination skills but it was great to see him engage with other people and learn to take instructions before he heads to school!
