It’s never too early to start on reading. Early literacy skills are encouraged to start as early as possible – the earlier the better we say. To cultivate an early reader is what we also hope to have for our child. It wasn’t something we get to experience when we were younger. Our parents didn’t have the time to go thru nursery rhymes nor bedtime stories, the first steps to develop our speech and language developments. Reading is not just about knowing new stories, it also helps children to be familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books.
Therefore, on our journey in search of good children literature, we found Owl Reader Club – a club specially designed to encourage families to cultivate good reading habits with specially curated picture books for children under 7.

Read our reviews on the 5 books we received a few weeks back, all of these books are suitable for 1-3 years old. Below are the 2 Mandarin Books and 3 English books we have chosen for our toddler who will be turning 3 soon!
亲爱的动物园 (Dear Zoo)
Descriptions: Translated from the bestselling and award-winning Dear Zoo. A child wrote to the zoo for a pet but was sent a series of unsuitable choices. Can he ever find the perfect pet? An engaging and humorous lift-the-flap book that promises to delight!
What We like about it:
This is our toddler’s favourite book. With the lift-the-flap feature in all the pages makes it even more surprising and interesting to learn about the animals name in Chinese and different expression of emotions and characters from the author as well as the individual animals – why they are not the suitable choice for pets. For example; camels are too bad-tempered for being a pet! We can easily bring this book out on car rides or outings and still be able to enjoy learning.
我是国王
Descriptions: This is a witty and funny title from Belgium. A tortoise chanced upon a crown and declared that he is worthy to be king. Other animals started coming along to claim the throne too. Which of them would emerge victoriously?
What We like about it:
This book attracts our toddler’s attention straight away with its eye-popping vibrant background. The book is perfect for children learning about comprehending the different animals name, colours and morals of taking things that don’t belong to you. He enjoys pointing out the different animals, while we can remind him some values from the story.
The Lion Inside (Paperback version)
Descriptions:
From the creator of the known and loved Bright Side lifestyle brand, Rachel Bright, and the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Jim Field, comes a feel good rhyming story about one little mouse trying to make himself heard and discovering along the way that even the smallest of us has the heart of a lion. Perfect for fans of Giraffes Can’t Dance this stylish book from two contemporary stars really is something to shout about – it will make you laugh, cry and read it every bedtime!
What We like about it:
One of our new bedtime storybook as it let our child learn about being confident of himself whether he’s big or small. The images are adorable and funny to look at AND we loved reading it every night while laughing at the timid lion. We recommend for parents to get this book for children who’s not confident of themselves especially in front of strangers.
From Head to Toe (Big Sized Paperback)
Descriptions:
I can do it! is the confidence-building message of this fun-filled interactive picture book. A variety of familiar animals, depicted in colourful collages, invites young children to copy their antics as they wiggle, stomp, thump, and bend across the strikingly designed pages.
What We like about it:
Another book we read almost every day – another favourite! Our toddler enjoys mimicking all the animals antics and reading out loud “I can do it” when he did it. It also helps to boost his confidence when we asked him to help during house cleaning, with him saying ” he can do this and that” just liked what this book is about. Not only learning about animals again, he is also aware of discovering different body parts such as – wiggle your hips etc.
When Dragons are Dreaming
Descriptions:
Poor little Dragon just can’t get to sleep, no matter how hard he tries. Instead, what he’d really like to do is dance through the moonlight and play games in the starlit sky with the fairies …but will they let him? This book will be perfect at bedtimes for settling sleepyheads down for the night. Another beautifully written, velvety verse from James Mayhew with beautiful illustrations from Lindsey Gardiner who won the Richard and Judy prize with her Poppy and Max characters.
What We like about it:
This is the kind of book best to put our toddler to bed as he relates to the little dragon who doesn’t want to go to bed. The illustration is beautifully drawn and the storyline is charming in its little way as it ties dragons and fairies together. We like that the story is simple and easy to understand, and the words are large enough for our toddler to follow through word by word.
The Gruffalo
Descriptions:
A clever mouse uses the threat of a terrifying creature to keep from being eaten by a fox, an owl, and a snake–only to have to outwit that creature as well. A Julia Donaldson classic. Smarties Book Prize Gold Award Winner
What We like about it:
Who doesn’t love Gruffalo? Even before reading this, we have watched one of the Gruffalo’s theatre play before so the furry characters were not a stranger to us. It may seem like a more advanced book for a 3-year-old to understand as it means he has to take in that irony of how a small mouse can scare off (outsmart) his predators. But we see him gradually have grown to like the characters each time we read with him. Nevertheless, everyone should still have a book of the Gruffalo as one of their childhood books!
