Calling all die-hard rom-com fans (especially the ladies!) of the primitive 1990 Oscar-winning movie that starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, Ghost The Musical made an impressive comeback Live on stage in Singapore from 4 November 2015! Bringing on the blockbuster classic to a more intimate and impeccable visual feast than having the heart-wrenching scenes on screen.
We were totally blown away by the crazy use of the illusion effects, helmed by the leading stage and film illusionist, Paul Kieve who did wonders with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The combination of modern technology and an emotion-packed performance from the cast brings the story to life on the big stage. With books dropping from shelves to tipping tables and flying objects, the transition was seamless and often had us gasp in astonishment as we were merely few metres from the stage – what, how did they do that!
We took our seats on the opening night to a theatre filled with awaiting audiences gazing upon the dreamy images of the casts projected on the stage. Breaking the ice were the two main leads Sam and Molly played by Liam Doyle and Lucie Jones moving into their love nest with the help of their good friend, Carl portrayed by David Roberts.
In came the whole new version and younger Sam who definitely adds on to our lists of the hottest broadway actor we have seen so far. His vocals were impressive and our favourite part was when he had his moment with the unfailing unchained melody singing imitating Elvis Presley just to brighten Molly’s day, was also proven by his role as Fiyero in Wicked. Not only he went thru that door with ease, and into our hearts with his passionate and pure love for Molly. (Not difficult to guess the gender of the person writing this article huh).
Next was Lucie, with her stunning vocals when we first saw her on X- factor for “I will always love you” took over our tear ducts when she was doing her solo ballad “With you”. She sang with such heart-wrenching voice on someone waking up in the morning and fails to come to term that a love one so dearly was no longer in her life anymore. Hearing it live – brought tears to our eyes and we’d spend the money to get to hear it again on CDs.
Another thing you would observe in Ghost the Musical is how they brilliantly deliver the whole experience without extensive props, and instead with clever positioning and use of visual illusions. Take for example the classic scene where Sam was shot and seen chasing after the assailant, only to realised that he has died and no one can see or hear him. This scene had us in awe since the transition was so fast that we only realised it has happened after it did!
If you read our interview previously, you might have known that Wendy Mae Brown would be the highlight of the performance. Though Wendy only appears near the later part of the first half, she stole the show with her excellent portray of Oda Mae Brown, the psychic. And so it is very much a teary emotional ride for the first part where we witness the death of Sam and Molly’s anguish, you can almost feel the raw pain of Molly’s loss. Thankfully, Oda Mae Brown comes in with a beautiful number and lightened up the mood for a good while before we plunged into the tenderness of Ghost the Musical.
If you have a penchant for romance storyline coupled with some spectacular visual effects then you should not miss this! And our growing obsession of Liam officially urged you to catch the performance at Marina Bay Sands. So watched the movie or not, we would pull you in to catch it live with us if we could!
